If you are concerned that someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, it’s important to know that support is available. Referrals to Fermanagh & Omagh Women’s Aid are welcome from a variety of sources – not only from women seeking help themselves, but also from friends, family members, the 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Violence Helpline, statutory agencies, and voluntary or community-based organisations.
If you are referring someone to our service, please be aware that you must first obtain their permission. It is essential that the person being referred is aware of and agrees to the referral, and that they have given clear consent for their personal information to be shared with us. Respecting their autonomy and privacy is vital in ensuring that any support offered is both safe and appropriate.

Remember is it really important to listen in a way that makes them feel safe and supported. Below is a list of Do’s and Don’ts:
Do
- Listen carefully to what they are saying
- Try not to interrupt when they are talking
- Reassure them that you believe them and that they are not alone
- Encourage them to express their feelings if they want to
- If you are unsure how to start the conversation, ask if ‘they ever feel sacred, fearful or frightened’ in the relationship
- Allow them to make their own decisions about reporting incidents or crimes to the Police
- Suggest contacting a support service such as Women’s Aid for confidential guidance and information
Don't
- Blame them for what has happened
- Pressure them to talk about things they don’t want to – if they don’t want to talk at that moment, reassure them you are there when they feel ready to talk
- Make any decisions or take actions on their behalf, such as phoning the police or a solicitor
- Contact the perpetrator – you could make things difficult if they are still together
- Urge them to leave their partner – they may not be ready or able to do this
